We've been in the house for just over two years now and are for the most part happy as clams with it! And if there are parts we wish we'd done differently, we have only ourselves to blame!<br />

Two years out from beginning treatment for lymphoma, I am healthy and happy to have recently had my chemo port removed! We are also both happy and sad to report that the farmhouse is scheduled to be a practice fire for the fire department next spring. I am in the process of making a photo collage in our hallway that shows several views of the farmhouse in its better days. Other than that, we're battening down the hatches for winter!Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-50181828046079694522010-08-22T13:18:00.000-07:002010-08-22T13:18:43.163-07:00Summer 2010<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF9CeLacOI/AAAAAAAAAVw/nbxYYIuPeSQ/s1600/IMG_0251.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF9CeLacOI/AAAAAAAAAVw/nbxYYIuPeSQ/s320/IMG_0251.jpg" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF85yBMD7I/AAAAAAAAAVY/UJQA_P7pB_c/s1600/IMG_0225.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF85yBMD7I/AAAAAAAAAVY/UJQA_P7pB_c/s320/IMG_0225.jpg" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF80FkHKlI/AAAAAAAAAVI/jkwAkW0IrNo/s1600/JessnDan+boys,+house,+festus+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF80FkHKlI/AAAAAAAAAVI/jkwAkW0IrNo/s320/JessnDan+boys,+house,+festus+001.jpg" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF8_Hx47dI/AAAAAAAAAVo/fTrk88ooba8/s1600/IMG_0235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF8_Hx47dI/AAAAAAAAAVo/fTrk88ooba8/s320/IMG_0235.jpg" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF87uBgWoI/AAAAAAAAAVg/gqLP9pYoFCY/s1600/IMG_0245.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/THF87uBgWoI/AAAAAAAAAVg/gqLP9pYoFCY/s320/IMG_0245.jpg" /></a></div>We've finally reached a state of "done" that we can be happy with! There are little things that can we worked on that come up every day, like trim (uugh, we're big picture people!). I finished laying tile in the north bathroom, some lovely slate from Building Hope, although I still have to clean a bit more in there. Last weekend we had an open house, well attended, and it was great to show off all our hard work! Thanks to Deb for taking pictures whilst we were busy talking!Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-47739539667868420002010-01-09T18:29:00.000-08:002010-01-09T18:29:58.774-08:00Houston...We Have Occupancy!<div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">We took forever about it, but we have finally moved in to the new place. There were lots of little details like purchasing a kitchen stove and getting propane service and a phone line put in that took a bit of doing, but as of the beginning of October we have been living in the joint! There are plenty of things to still be done, with more being discovered every day, but we are warm and dry and well fed and those are the things that matter. We've been giving ourselves some time and space and not getting too worked up about things because the week that we moved in I went to the doctor to have a lump on my collarbone looked at, the upshot of which is that I've been diagnosed with Stage IIA Hodgkins lymphoma. I started chemo at the beginning of November and am set to have it every two weeks for the next six months. I feel OK, no super awful side effects yet, although I have had my head shaved because it's pretty sure certain that I will be losing my hair. So I'm not busting my chops about anything, although I have two rooms that need tiling and lots of stuff to be put away. Bit by bit things are getting there - we have a lovely "sitting room" in front of our stoveNorbert with the bookcases from Grandma and Grandpa Hedges house and Grandpa's repatriated Foxfire books - thanks, Aunt Bets! The turquoise pig from the Illinois Hoy contingency is presiding over our kitchen, Grandma's gargoyle is stationed outside the front door, and the poppy picture that used to hang in Grandma and Grandpa Hoy's dining room is gracing our guest bath. And Dan just put up the loft bed that Dad and I made for me to take to college - it has been languishing in Mom's basement for lo these many years, awaiting a new place alongside Erin's sunflower bed box in our south "Niece and Nephew"bedroom. And the nasturtium plate collection has been put up. So it is all coming together. Come spring when I am done with chemo we're planning a super duper housewarming extravaganza to show it off, but in the meantime, here's some pics from June through now!<br />

Yesterday we were declared done by the appraiser, we signed on it this noon, and promptly started thinking up new projects to torment ourselves with. Where will the garage go? Can we put in a pond in the dooryard? Can we reinstall a ram pump on the stream to have a waterfall? Tomorrow we are doing area beautification, tool repatriation, and long neglected farmhouse cleanliness measures. And Sunday we are doing nothing - I repeat, nothing. Breakfast late, followed by visits from some family and friends. Then Monday I will finish tiling the Lowell Pate shower enclosure so that when the propane tank comes, I can take my first truly hot shower in months. Or a bath in my fabulously deep slipper tub. Hmmm...so hard to choose.Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-90732539698202297752009-05-20T11:54:00.000-07:002009-05-20T13:54:35.117-07:00Lilac Time<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRpYwFbXVI/AAAAAAAAARw/jP2hqV7YZ6Y/s1600-h/House+May2+024.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRpYwFbXVI/AAAAAAAAARw/jP2hqV7YZ6Y/s200/House+May2+024.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338007332286324050" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRpYiQEL4I/AAAAAAAAARo/TiJUAsz_wKM/s1600-h/House+May2+021.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRpYiQEL4I/AAAAAAAAARo/TiJUAsz_wKM/s200/House+May2+021.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338007328572845954" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRpYVG3XuI/AAAAAAAAARg/yq_hW5rIiKE/s1600-h/House+May2+015.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRpYVG3XuI/AAAAAAAAARg/yq_hW5rIiKE/s200/House+May2+015.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338007325044596450" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRiyJC6ssI/AAAAAAAAARY/2hzLK2VEqGc/s1600-h/House+May+034.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRiyJC6ssI/AAAAAAAAARY/2hzLK2VEqGc/s200/House+May+034.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338000071902016194" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRgmjpxrgI/AAAAAAAAARA/53tglXQ79h0/s1600-h/House+May2+008.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRgmjpxrgI/AAAAAAAAARA/53tglXQ79h0/s200/House+May2+008.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337997673862639106" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRbZpaebeI/AAAAAAAAAQw/tbjSQby8iP4/s1600-h/House+May2+001.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRbZpaebeI/AAAAAAAAAQw/tbjSQby8iP4/s200/House+May2+001.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337991954512637410" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRbZBS18PI/AAAAAAAAAQg/_mCO1-B5cI4/s1600-h/House+May+032.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRbZBS18PI/AAAAAAAAAQg/_mCO1-B5cI4/s200/House+May+032.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337991943743205618" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRbY7CbCOI/AAAAAAAAAQY/GL7eU7vxMpk/s1600-h/House+May+039.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/ShRbY7CbCOI/AAAAAAAAAQY/GL7eU7vxMpk/s200/House+May+039.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337991942063720674" border="0" /></a><br />The roof has been Enkadrained and dirted, with much effort by the usual crew plus Uncle Jim and his Cat as well as his work crew. He lifted the dirt up in the bucket of his Cat and we hauled it out of there and spread it. It's been seeded with rye grass that is just coming up and I have oodles of perennials to transplant once the innards of the house are done. This weekend (Memorial Day) we will be painting up a storm and putting in the glass block shower, cabinets, and assorted trim bits. Before we got the roof on I was just so tired and unhappy, but now that that's done we are at the "kind of fun" portion of the house, the prettification stage. And we have hot water again at the farmhouse, which was also taking its toll on our oomph. When you move tons of dirt, you really want a hot shower afterwards. The farmhouse is giving us distinct signs that it's time to get out, but when you consider that it is 110 years old this year, it has stood up remarkably well in spite of several generations of Hoy cobbling. Now if only the wind would stop blowing - I have had horrible dreams about the farmhouse blowing over or falling off its very minimal foundation before we finish the new one.Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-81033102186637404712009-04-15T14:50:00.000-07:002009-04-15T16:50:02.560-07:00Barefoot!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnKShUixI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/X50hX0oSpPE/s1600-h/House+April+022.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnKShUixI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/X50hX0oSpPE/s200/House+April+022.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325057035880139538" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnKMr7cTI/AAAAAAAAAQI/qhX9PcbXUjg/s1600-h/House+April+023.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnKMr7cTI/AAAAAAAAAQI/qhX9PcbXUjg/s200/House+April+023.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325057034314019122" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnJ6A9HEI/AAAAAAAAAQA/bNXNHGD4lRU/s1600-h/House+April+013.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnJ6A9HEI/AAAAAAAAAQA/bNXNHGD4lRU/s200/House+April+013.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325057029301935170" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnJzwhFfI/AAAAAAAAAP4/2soHu-CghaA/s1600-h/House+April+005.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnJzwhFfI/AAAAAAAAAP4/2soHu-CghaA/s200/House+April+005.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325057027622376946" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnJj4j2QI/AAAAAAAAAPw/8hYZv_K6auo/s1600-h/House+April+006.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SeZnJj4j2QI/AAAAAAAAAPw/8hYZv_K6auo/s200/House+April+006.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325057023361145090" border="0" /></a><br />Coming back from the new house this morning, I decided to ditch my crocs, which are on their last legs. When we are done with the house I will be done with them! They have taken a licking, as have we, but we keep on going. I thought tiling was bad, and it was, especially when I decided to grout, then go to work, then clean the grout when I got home at 9:30. Bad idea - I was out there till 2:30. But it looks good now, especially with my bare feet on it! The hardwood glue is currently kicking me six ways to Sunday, but it's going down and looking good too. We have most of the plumbing done, along with most of the drywall and most of the electric, so we're just rounding up the straggling bits and the cabinetry!! Check out the fabulous painting Erin and I did on our stained concrete floor - nasturtiums make everything better!Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-55645820786386517602009-03-17T08:36:00.000-07:002009-03-17T09:19:12.947-07:00March Madness<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Sb_NScE5clI/AAAAAAAAAPo/fT_qUG-q8mE/s1600-h/house+0309+012.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Sb_NScE5clI/AAAAAAAAAPo/fT_qUG-q8mE/s200/house+0309+012.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314191801978548818" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Sb_NSIn8nlI/AAAAAAAAAPg/2bVsw70l1OU/s1600-h/house+0309+007.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Sb_NSIn8nlI/AAAAAAAAAPg/2bVsw70l1OU/s200/house+0309+007.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314191796756848210" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Sb_NSHOCnmI/AAAAAAAAAPY/PurJwCbRAJ4/s1600-h/house+0309+005.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Sb_NSHOCnmI/AAAAAAAAAPY/PurJwCbRAJ4/s200/house+0309+005.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314191796379754082" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Sb_NRiocQZI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/YT6RarFXMBo/s1600-h/house+0309+006.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Sb_NRiocQZI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/YT6RarFXMBo/s200/house+0309+006.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314191786558374290" border="0" /></a><br />Slogging away here, literally, since everything is melting. Getting from the farmhouse out to the new house is an exercise in puddle management, but yesterday and today were quite warm and windy, so things are drying up nicely. Sunday and yesterday Dan, Deb and I put in our thermopanes between the beams and got them trimmed. We did have one pane blow out before we had it secured, but otherwise all went well and it adds a lot of light. Mom and I got all the other windows trimmed last week between the window and the box and Sam stained the trim for the box edges on Sunday, so today I'll get that up. The trim we've been using is some rough sawn cedar that Dad had in Warehouse #3. It looks great, appropriately rustic, and smells great too, but the sawdust it makes is so fine it gets into your lungs and makes you all wheezy, so I'll be glad to be done with that. I've been cleaning mortar off the post facings so I can stain those too and stained the concrete in the two bedrooms, one copper and one green. The green bedroom Erin and I are going to paint nasturtiums over top of, like the living room in the farmhouse. The tile in the entryway is in and Thursday I'm probably going to lay tile, the yellow stuff, in the kitchen. So then we just need a wee bit of plumbing and some drywall! And a nap -I'm thinking I may just nap for all of May.Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-17532007932220379192009-02-16T09:56:00.000-08:002009-02-16T14:20:31.661-08:00Post Funk Action<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZnkpxqButI/AAAAAAAAAPI/DSugAvc284Q/s1600-h/pinball,toyota,+house+020.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZnkpxqButI/AAAAAAAAAPI/DSugAvc284Q/s200/pinball,toyota,+house+020.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303521442560850642" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZnhSqSXv1I/AAAAAAAAAPA/8yywwJ-lt4k/s1600-h/House+Dad+068.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZnhSqSXv1I/AAAAAAAAAPA/8yywwJ-lt4k/s200/House+Dad+068.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303517746910707538" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZne-_-uQEI/AAAAAAAAAO4/pKICUYFgTuE/s1600-h/House+Dad+060.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZne-_-uQEI/AAAAAAAAAO4/pKICUYFgTuE/s200/House+Dad+060.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303515210113237058" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZne-xAxTAI/AAAAAAAAAOw/tXS2BKudcrk/s1600-h/House+Dad+048.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZne-xAxTAI/AAAAAAAAAOw/tXS2BKudcrk/s200/House+Dad+048.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303515206095293442" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZnYQUWoz3I/AAAAAAAAAOg/2zTkuosbgPg/s1600-h/pinball,toyota,+house+018.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SZnYQUWoz3I/AAAAAAAAAOg/2zTkuosbgPg/s200/pinball,toyota,+house+018.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303507811058634610" border="0" /></a><br />So... as soon as the hardest part of the house got done we had to go on to even harder things. Dan's sister, Jan, passed away at Christmas from a thyroid condition that went undiagnosed too long. Jan had a hard row to hoe due to some mental illness issues that had worsened in recent years, so her condition got chalked up to that and to her stubborn, "Don't help me, I can help myself" nature. Her late night phone calls were sometimes a trial, but now we miss them.<br /><br />Then there's my Dad, who has been our mainstay through this whole project - part of the reason we thought we could do all this ourselves is because he did it, twice, with three small children to get in the way . So he knew what to do about all things building. He gave us tons of advice, mostly prefaced by " It's none of my business, but..." or "Call me a meddling old fool, but...". He had an injurious fall last spring that had him feeling down and out for most of the summer - every time he'd start to feel like he was healed up he'd over do and be right back to feeling crappy. He finally went to a sports doctor who found he had a torn rotator cuff and did surgery in October. Dad whined a lot about the physical therapy and subverted the "no driving" rules whenever possible, but he seemed to be getting better for a few weeks. By early December he was back to feeling lots of back pain, probably more than he told us, and had been in to the doctors several times trying to get some help and sort out what his problem was. The pain meds they gave him stopped him up something fierce, so he was choosing between the kinds of pain and relying on industrial strength doses of Ben-Gay and back rubs from anyone he could talk into giving him one. The day after Christmas the doctors were able to say that they suspected he had some form of cancer in his trunk that had metastasized to his bones and that was why he was having such back pain. They scheduled him for an MRI and a CT the following week and then a biopsy to determine where the cancer started and where to go from there the next week, but in the course of that two weeks he went from being in lots of pain, but mobile and lucid to being delirious and needing help for any movement. The Friday his biopsy was scheduled Mom and I were only able to get him out of the house and to the hospital by dint of adrenalin and desperation. From there he was admitted and had the biopsy and an MRI, but by the time the results of that came back on Monday his kidneys had ceased functioning and he was beyond the help of dialysis, much less treatment for the cancer. He died Tuesday, January 13th.<br /><br />As you can imagine, we haven't been super active on the house since we finished the walls. I am so glad that I was able to spend those last few weeks with Dad, helping Mom keep him comfortable. And then afterwards everything sent me into a state - I keep thinking of things I want to ask him and now I can't, want to borrow a tool and don't know where to look, want to see if he knows the answer to the 12:30 Quiz question on WPR. But lately we have managed to emerge from our funk and are making some progress. Dan has all the interior walls framed up, which don't look overly exciting in the pics, I admit. I've been working on flooring, laying tile around the masonry heater, which we've named Norbert. We always derided Dad's habit of saving things, but it has helped us a lot. He had enough tile left over from doing the floors in their house to do the hallway and border around the stove, including a bucket of leftover pieces that had been cut and saved us from having to mess with tile cutting a lot. The weird angles in Mom and Dad's house are almost the same weird angles in our house. And I like it a lot more than any of the spendy tiles I've seen around town. I'm doing a faux limestone finish on the kitchen floor and a leather look flooring made with brown paper and polyurethane on the utility room floor. The electrical work should be able to happen in the next couple weeks and I'm ordering cabinets and thermopanes for the areas between the beams on the living room side of the house. So we're back at work, trying to do Dad proud, and just glad he got to see the finished walls if not the whole enchilada.Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-55851272822499125082008-12-16T10:04:00.000-08:002008-12-16T12:41:57.154-08:00It Looks like a House!<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgRaiGfk5I/AAAAAAAAAOQ/XJM85qLyems/s1600-h/jessndan4+006.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280489710620218258" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 150px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgRaiGfk5I/AAAAAAAAAOQ/XJM85qLyems/s200/jessndan4+006.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgOVmIAexI/AAAAAAAAAOI/qkZOSw1XlqY/s1600-h/jessndan5+004.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280486327266081554" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgOVmIAexI/AAAAAAAAAOI/qkZOSw1XlqY/s200/jessndan5+004.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgOVaYBnfI/AAAAAAAAAOA/Fe4ZM-TZCU4/s1600-h/jessndan4+015.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280486324112039410" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgOVaYBnfI/AAAAAAAAAOA/Fe4ZM-TZCU4/s200/jessndan4+015.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgOVCOatvI/AAAAAAAAAN4/t7kopPvJhaE/s1600-h/jessndan3+039.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280486317629290226" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgOVCOatvI/AAAAAAAAAN4/t7kopPvJhaE/s200/jessndan3+039.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgOUlbsuzI/AAAAAAAAANw/6I50K5WvN4k/s1600-h/jessndan3+050.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280486309900368690" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgOUlbsuzI/AAAAAAAAANw/6I50K5WvN4k/s200/jessndan3+050.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgCFUaoMZI/AAAAAAAAANg/teJloMWQgF0/s1600-h/jessndan5+004.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280472853494903186" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgCFUaoMZI/AAAAAAAAANg/teJloMWQgF0/s200/jessndan5+004.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgCF9nqcKI/AAAAAAAAANo/cG6dkJ24kyk/s1600-h/jessndan5+001.jpg"></a><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUf3T5EnQ1I/AAAAAAAAANQ/ztlBetbRi30/s1600-h/jessndan4+006.jpg"></a><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgCFOTRp4I/AAAAAAAAANY/Eu1_h8f8hjA/s1600-h/jessndan5+002.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280472851853453186" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUgCFOTRp4I/AAAAAAAAANY/Eu1_h8f8hjA/s200/jessndan5+002.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUf3Tg1SBAI/AAAAAAAAANI/AwUlbVpLA2M/s1600-h/jessndan3+045.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280461002718184450" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUf3Tg1SBAI/AAAAAAAAANI/AwUlbVpLA2M/s200/jessndan3+045.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><div><div>It's so nice to be able to say "I'm going out to the house." instead of "I'm going out to the building site." As of today, we have 1/3 of a wall to go, but as the high today is supposed to be 2 degrees, it's not a good time to mess with mortar. But before weeks end it should be done!! Then we can clean up - I am looking forward to the day when I no longer traipse sand and lime into the farmhouse - and can put up interior walls and floors! It will be nice to go on to something else, although it happens just as we've gotten really good at the cordwood. The northern wall has a tree bottle mural in it which turned out great. Unfortunately the flash on the camera overpowers the light coming through the bottles, so it's not super obvious in pics. The final wall that we're working on has the Big Dipper and Orion done in bottles around the window, although they're not done yet so no pics just yet. You'll just have to come visit to see them properly! As usual, Deb and Mom and Erin and Dave and Matt and Leya must be thanked - they've been dynamos of action. </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-63023803666104077072008-10-19T17:44:00.000-07:002008-12-16T10:04:36.454-08:00Walls, Stove, & Windows<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUfsV66RQQI/AAAAAAAAANA/zaxFLzy62zA/s1600-h/jessndan3+035.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280448949450260738" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUfsV66RQQI/AAAAAAAAANA/zaxFLzy62zA/s200/jessndan3+035.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUfsVRAtElI/AAAAAAAAAM4/c8bYGm1moMY/s1600-h/IMG_0554.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280448938202960466" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUfsVRAtElI/AAAAAAAAAM4/c8bYGm1moMY/s200/IMG_0554.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUfsVJIVvmI/AAAAAAAAAMw/fPMdVNsbtdA/s1600-h/IMG_0562.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280448936087502434" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SUfsVJIVvmI/AAAAAAAAAMw/fPMdVNsbtdA/s200/IMG_0562.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div>We're proceeding apace with the walls, which look so lovely when they're done - from a distance they look like stone. Labor intensive and messy, but beautiful. We also have the framework for the round green door done. So we're looking hobbity! The masons from Rock-n-Stone returned and gave us a chimney, so we've been working out the idiosyncrasies of our stove and seasoning it gradually. We've had loads of help from Deb in spite of a hand injury, plus Sam and Erin and Dave. Loree and Fran put in an admirable and beyond the call of duty effort last weekend- bless you both! Mom and Deb started on the bottle wall this afternoon while I was at work and it is lovely - the pictures don't do it justice. Matt's family has put in their two cent's worth too, splitting and laying up wall. Lauren likes to split wood - Matt starts her on the wedge and she pounds like a madwoman! Dad, our advisor cum laude, has been sidelined by rotator cuff surgery, but is healing up pretty well. It looks to be a long haul for him healingwise, but thankfully they were able to figure out what was <span style="font-family:arial;">with</span> him and fix it. </div></div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-15022169615530933522008-09-21T17:05:00.000-07:002008-09-21T20:31:08.111-07:00Roof, Part 2,3,4 and more<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNcRQ9w_x8I/AAAAAAAAAJk/rus3HBZY0dI/s1600-h/bit2.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248682873879250882" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNcRQ9w_x8I/AAAAAAAAAJk/rus3HBZY0dI/s200/bit2.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNcQvqhX-7I/AAAAAAAAAJM/NMXgOjCHtsY/s1600-h/patehoy.jpg"></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNcQvpL7uOI/AAAAAAAAAJU/o4AEBinucK4/s1600-h/bit1.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248682301419403490" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNcQvpL7uOI/AAAAAAAAAJU/o4AEBinucK4/s200/bit1.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNcQvy4h8pI/AAAAAAAAAJc/rQv5_1fLPEk/s1600-h/patehoy.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248682304022377106" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNcQvy4h8pI/AAAAAAAAAJc/rQv5_1fLPEk/s200/patehoy.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cosmicbandito/2874946735/in/photostream/"></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cosmicbandito/2875777858/in/photostream/"></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.flickr.com/photos/cosmicbandito/2875777858/"></a><br /><a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.flickr.com/photos/cosmicbandito/2875776682/"></a><br /><a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.flickr.com/photos/cosmicbandito/2874955127/in/photostream/"></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNbpymJDmfI/AAAAAAAAAI0/yueUQ24NFPE/s1600-h/IMG_0542.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248639471188154866" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNbpymJDmfI/AAAAAAAAAI0/yueUQ24NFPE/s200/IMG_0542.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNbpzNmaewI/AAAAAAAAAI8/ESPi9M9l-e0/s1600-h/IMG_0541.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248639481780271874" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNbpzNmaewI/AAAAAAAAAI8/ESPi9M9l-e0/s200/IMG_0541.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNbpzQZaUKI/AAAAAAAAAJE/kAfp5efBVzA/s1600-h/IMG_0537.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248639482531041442" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SNbpzQZaUKI/AAAAAAAAAJE/kAfp5efBVzA/s200/IMG_0537.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>So... we've got the waterproofing layer down with the help of the Hoy/Pate clan from Illinois. Cousin Tracey, her husband Lowell and their two kids Weston and Casen came up last weekend for work/airshow enjoyment. Saturday we got rained out, but as it was Lauren's birthday it worked out OK. Sunday we stuck down Hydroseal like mad and cut insulation. This week we've got insulation stuck down, with plastic, Enkadrain and dirt to follow and pending approval walls! The roof now must be blinding planes taking off from the airport, as it's a giant aluminum foil covered disc! It's also been wildlife central here - large treefrogs have visited the building, newly hatched snapping turtles have appeared in numbers on the road between the new house and the old, snakes have been seen, sandhill cranes have circled, turkeys have made a ruckus, and someone, an owl or hawk or eagle, ate breakfast on top of our roof insulation and left the innards for us to discover this morning. A charming way to start the day, I must say!! </div></div></div></div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-32401426323722843312008-08-27T08:01:00.000-07:002008-08-27T11:24:36.911-07:00Roof!<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLWaiyZ8MSI/AAAAAAAAAIk/wok8YrgBDL0/s1600-h/IMG_0521.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239263663952245026" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLWaiyZ8MSI/AAAAAAAAAIk/wok8YrgBDL0/s200/IMG_0521.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLWajOLoJwI/AAAAAAAAAIs/nZ3Md3UAsU8/s1600-h/IMG_0520.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239263671408404226" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLWajOLoJwI/AAAAAAAAAIs/nZ3Md3UAsU8/s200/IMG_0520.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLV6cTl0hGI/AAAAAAAAAIM/nonh97O5Ass/s1600-h/jessndan2+064.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239228368229270626" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLV6cTl0hGI/AAAAAAAAAIM/nonh97O5Ass/s200/jessndan2+064.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLV6cwiwFgI/AAAAAAAAAIU/W9I-19iXZd4/s1600-h/IMG_0534.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239228376001025538" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLV6cwiwFgI/AAAAAAAAAIU/W9I-19iXZd4/s200/IMG_0534.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLV6dP2QiJI/AAAAAAAAAIc/3fFdaG6SIYI/s1600-h/IMG_0519.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239228384404342930" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLV6dP2QiJI/AAAAAAAAAIc/3fFdaG6SIYI/s200/IMG_0519.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLV1V7WQdWI/AAAAAAAAAIE/nzFB44UUFMk/s1600-h/jessndan2+061.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239222761084188002" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SLV1V7WQdWI/AAAAAAAAAIE/nzFB44UUFMk/s200/jessndan2+061.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div>So we now have a giant gazebo!! Dan is ironing out a few tricky bits at the center and we'll be putting on the waterproofing layer this weekend. The camphering and splitting is all done. We have a start ont he round green door too. On Sunday I did a trial wall to see how several different mortar mixes work. This week we are building the temporary posts for the interior and framing out the windows and we should be able to do cordwood next week. And isulation and Enkadrain and dirt on the roof! As of 7/13, we have all of the beams up. Despite several moments of extreme fright, no one was permanently injured. We'll be centering and attaching with giant spikes for the next bit - the roof should be here in ten days, followed by the Enkadrain and then the great dirt extravaganza, combined with laying up the walls. And windows - Dan will be picking up about half of them Wednesday so he can frame them up with a drip edge. Deb and Sam have been a great help - we have roughly two thirds of the logs chamfered, in a shady tent kept upright by Deb in spite of the recent winds. Matt Hicks, Matt Hoy, and Dave Kranz have also been burly/wiry workhorses that we could not have done without - bless you all!! It's starting to look like a house - soon the boxes of tile in my porch will be of use!! Once the roof is on, the masons will return and give us a chimney, the walls will go up inside and the electricians and plumbers can work their magic!! Keep an eye out for work weekend e-mails - we'll be happy to see anyone who cares to wander out our way!!</div></div></div></div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-64298988111608053252008-05-18T21:28:00.001-07:002008-05-18T22:14:19.190-07:00Bricks and Beams<a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SDEMUujJfQI/AAAAAAAAAGo/CDiGuE19aOk/s1600-h/stove+in+progress.bmp"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5201952594822003970" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SDEMUujJfQI/AAAAAAAAAGo/CDiGuE19aOk/s200/stove+in+progress.bmp" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SDEMU-jJfRI/AAAAAAAAAGw/Pdt1hG4bCaU/s1600-h/bench+in+progress.bmp"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5201952599116971282" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SDEMU-jJfRI/AAAAAAAAAGw/Pdt1hG4bCaU/s200/bench+in+progress.bmp" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SDEKoujJfPI/AAAAAAAAAGg/J9yyVhp6gAY/s1600-h/stove.bmp"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5201950739396132082" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/SDEKoujJfPI/AAAAAAAAAGg/J9yyVhp6gAY/s200/stove.bmp" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.flickr.com/photos/cosmicbandito/2503070545/in/set-72157605131393145"></a><br /><br /><br /><div>Spring has purportedly sprung, although you wouldn't know it from the frost advisory tonight in mid-May. What has sprung up is our stove! The masons came a few weeks ago and faced the heater with a lovely brick, a mix of reds and oranges and purples, oddly enough, and put on a nice limestone for the bench. They'll return to do the chimney and the insulating cap on the stove once we have a roof on, at which point we'll be able to fire the stove up and try it out. We've taken down the little straw shack and are putting up steel this week for the center supports. Which means we can go on to nice big Douglas Fir beams next week, since they have finally arrived!! We had a moderate delay when the beams arrived from the west coast with only two sides sawn, which makes it a little hard to balance. Kind of important, when you've got sixteen of them and they weigh about 300 lbs apiece. So they had to make a little jaunt back up to the Cities and visit the man with the giant plane. Now they look beautiful, all twenty eight feet of them. Doug Fir has a nice almost pink grain to it. I'll post pics shortly - my camera has been on the fritz recently, so I'm relying on the cameras and kindness of family for documentation. We've also got the flashing installed around the edge of the foundation so our insulation is protected. Now it's on to splitting the wood for the walls and getting the beams up. As ever, onwards and upwards!! </div></div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-35972613494551432612008-01-05T16:31:00.000-08:002008-01-05T17:44:46.754-08:00While it's Winter...<a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4AwzyGwEwI/AAAAAAAAAGA/b9b-l9A47TQ/s1600-h/IMG_0104.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152171639893398274" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4AwzyGwEwI/AAAAAAAAAGA/b9b-l9A47TQ/s200/IMG_0104.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4Aw1iGwExI/AAAAAAAAAGI/oc_-dt9gYCM/s1600-h/IMG_0108.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152171669958169362" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4Aw1iGwExI/AAAAAAAAAGI/oc_-dt9gYCM/s200/IMG_0108.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4Aw3iGwEyI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/jI9dAxBGGoE/s1600-h/IMG_0036.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152171704317907746" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4Aw3iGwEyI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/jI9dAxBGGoE/s200/IMG_0036.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4Aw4yGwEzI/AAAAAAAAAGY/YDOAEgVbQko/s1600-h/IMG_0035.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152171725792744242" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4Aw4yGwEzI/AAAAAAAAAGY/YDOAEgVbQko/s200/IMG_0035.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4Ao2iGwEvI/AAAAAAAAAF4/j0zLziWH1No/s1600-h/IMG_0109.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152162891045016306" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R4Ao2iGwEvI/AAAAAAAAAF4/j0zLziWH1No/s200/IMG_0109.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div>Welcome to 2008!! We've had a pseudo hiatus since the masonry heater guys were here, but it involved the holidays and the requisite cleaning and cooking and shopping, oh my. Plus several bouts of illness for both of us. In lieu of action, I thought I would share some pics of preparation that happened what seems like eons ago. Out wood has been stacked and drying for several years now, so it should be ready as all get out to be slapped in a wall in a few months. Some of the wood Dan cut from a stand of red pine and hemlock down the hill and we then stripped the bark and set it up to dry. Some of it we bought from a defunct log cabin building business by Bloomer, already stripped. Some of it had been sitting out uncovered for some time and has deteriorated into fuel for the test firings on the masonry heater when it is bricked over, but some of it was covered and has aged into nice wood for our project. </div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-81301617782176963332007-12-12T14:14:00.000-08:002007-12-12T16:58:16.529-08:00Masonry Heater Innards<a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2CCd9iS_eI/AAAAAAAAAFY/KbpySaLgA20/s1600-h/IMG_0462.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143254225703337442" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2CCd9iS_eI/AAAAAAAAAFY/KbpySaLgA20/s200/IMG_0462.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2CCg9iS_fI/AAAAAAAAAFg/0mYszkdRw-c/s1600-h/IMG_0475.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143254277242945010" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2CCg9iS_fI/AAAAAAAAAFg/0mYszkdRw-c/s200/IMG_0475.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2CChNiS_gI/AAAAAAAAAFo/kmdfU2hktSY/s1600-h/IMG_0480.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143254281537912322" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2CChNiS_gI/AAAAAAAAAFo/kmdfU2hktSY/s200/IMG_0480.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2CCi9iS_hI/AAAAAAAAAFw/19QJnjmTTic/s1600-h/IMG_0463.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143254311602683410" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2CCi9iS_hI/AAAAAAAAAFw/19QJnjmTTic/s200/IMG_0463.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2BmitiS_YI/AAAAAAAAAEo/1J3qxkEcGGE/s1600-h/IMG_0460.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143223520982138242" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2BmitiS_YI/AAAAAAAAAEo/1J3qxkEcGGE/s200/IMG_0460.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2Bmi9iS_ZI/AAAAAAAAAEw/0oKaX8Ipyl4/s1600-h/IMG_0462.JPG"></a><br /><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2BmjdiS_aI/AAAAAAAAAE4/KAISJzD6h3E/s1600-h/IMG_0469.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143223533867040162" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2BmjdiS_aI/AAAAAAAAAE4/KAISJzD6h3E/s200/IMG_0469.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2BjcdiS_VI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/fH4UR8Vx8-A/s1600-h/IMG_0461.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143220115073072466" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2BjcdiS_VI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/fH4UR8Vx8-A/s200/IMG_0461.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2BjctiS_WI/AAAAAAAAAEY/6ImKQwWa-w4/s1600-h/IMG_0460.JPG"></a><br /><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2BjddiS_XI/AAAAAAAAAEg/hJmCA4XFeKQ/s1600-h/IMG_0464.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143220132252941682" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R2BjddiS_XI/AAAAAAAAAEg/hJmCA4XFeKQ/s200/IMG_0464.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>We got everything roofed over, sheet metalled, and stuffed with straw this weekend and Dan put on our super duper $1 door and the bullet heater. Jeff and Dave, the crew from Gimme Shelter Construction in Amherst, have been hard at work in our little straw shack, putting up the innards of our masonry heater. They got here yesterday with a trailer of tools and a truckload of assorted bricks - concrete and firebrick and flue tile. And a Christmas present from me to me - originally I thought we had taken the bakeoven out of the plans, but they brought one, so by golly now I'm having one!! You can see the progress from the pics - instead of going straight up the chimney, the hot gas that a fire produces circulates up and around the bakeoven, then down to the front of the heater and around the side to the chimney through a heated bench. Once the interior stuff is done, then a local mason will face the whole thing in brick and build up a chimney for us, after the holiday probably. Then we may have a little rest till the big timbers come and the weather allows putting them up - we'll see. Also, we were recipients of an early visit from S. Claus - he left us a brand new ladder!! </div></div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-16137208527869359742007-12-02T15:57:00.000-08:002007-12-02T17:11:24.470-08:00Robert Burns was so right...<a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NW1O-5xuI/AAAAAAAAAD4/9liySYT_FXk/s1600-R/IMG_0456.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139547072314853090" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NW1O-5xuI/AAAAAAAAAD4/xcPorPwlprU/s200/IMG_0456.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NW1u-5xvI/AAAAAAAAAEA/RORZ2jg26kc/s1600-R/IMG_0458.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139547080904787698" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NW1u-5xvI/AAAAAAAAAEA/8wHCYTaReno/s200/IMG_0458.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NW2O-5xwI/AAAAAAAAAEI/ZPcCb8Mrrsc/s1600-R/IMG_0455.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139547089494722306" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NW2O-5xwI/AAAAAAAAAEI/TxTyh2yPG1I/s200/IMG_0455.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NRte-5xrI/AAAAAAAAADg/aEpCGLqZhvs/s1600-R/IMG_0450.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139541441612727986" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NRte-5xrI/AAAAAAAAADg/nMgweCon5U4/s200/IMG_0450.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NRxe-5xsI/AAAAAAAAADo/NxtzC8LrIeA/s1600-R/IMG_0452.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139541510332204738" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NRxe-5xsI/AAAAAAAAADo/vznvXk8H7ec/s200/IMG_0452.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NRz--5xtI/AAAAAAAAADw/S6KqGnYWdGM/s1600-R/IMG_0457.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139541553281877714" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/R1NRz--5xtI/AAAAAAAAADw/2VoJym98Gbg/s200/IMG_0457.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div>About the fate of the best laid plans of mice and men. We've gotten so much done, but none of it has worked out quite as planned. After the floor was done Uncle Jim's crew, headed by the super accomplished Chuck, who I am now ashamed to admit that for a while we called " the furry one" due to his rather bushy beard, returned to grade over our perimeter insulation and make things shipshape dirt wise for the winter. That guy can do ballet with a Caterpillar tractor - it's a sight to behold. Then Dan and Dad and I put up a temporary bracing and roof structure, Dan wrapped the inside posts with house wrap, and put up some of our super duper scrounger sheet metal. We got a load of it from a guy up by Colfax for less than you would pay for a Coke per sheet, thinking we would use it to cover the cordwood in a more secure fashion. But now it's covering our teeny weeny straw house!! Friday we got 97 bales of straw which I thought was too many but somehow turned out to be about 25 bales shy of what we need, and Mom and I stacked most of them inside the structure, first covering the bottom layer with plastic so it doesn't stain our beautiful but very slippery concrete floor. Then yesterday Matt ( Brother Most Fantastic) came out and helped me put up the plastic roof in the snow. I had gotten a silo cap from Farm and Fleet that I thought would cover the whole thing, except that geometry is not my friend. A square silo cap will not fit over your octagonal framework as perfectly as you think while standing in the aisle at the store, trying to do math in your head. It held through the six or so inches of snow we got, but only through the grace of God and some judicious use of bracing and tape. So today we shoveled - the outside, the inside, the roof, the driveway... And reinforced the plastic at the edges so it will be OK for a bit. The new plan is to use more of our sheet metal offal to roof it tomorrow. Inside it's quite pleasant and will be even more pleasant when we have the bullet heater going. We're going to give it a trial run as we roof tomorrow. The masonry heater folks wisely and blessedly postponed a week due to a more urgent job and the snow, so we should be ready for them next Monday, God willing and the creek don't rise, or the snow don't fly. </div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-21179384378406650802007-11-09T10:21:00.000-08:002007-11-09T11:43:20.457-08:00Floored!!<a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/RzS4AbQOhAI/AAAAAAAAADY/QvGy6MS9hIM/s1600-h/IMG_0448.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130928192937165826" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/RzS4AbQOhAI/AAAAAAAAADY/QvGy6MS9hIM/s320/IMG_0448.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/RzS1KrQOg-I/AAAAAAAAADI/i7pxyCrCBQM/s1600-h/IMG_0431.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130925070495941602" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/RzS1KrQOg-I/AAAAAAAAADI/i7pxyCrCBQM/s320/IMG_0431.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/RzS1LLQOg_I/AAAAAAAAADQ/CgTwMvk0pcg/s1600-h/IMG_0439.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130925079085876210" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/RzS1LLQOg_I/AAAAAAAAADQ/CgTwMvk0pcg/s320/IMG_0439.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/RzSyGLQOg9I/AAAAAAAAADA/rzRaJpQ8iEQ/s1600-h/IMG_0449.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130921694651646930" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/RzSyGLQOg9I/AAAAAAAAADA/rzRaJpQ8iEQ/s320/IMG_0449.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div>We have a floor!! And just in the nick of time - this morning we had snow, pretty wet fluffy snow. It's half melted already after an hour or so, but still - I know it's time for it, but I'm not super keen. Or maybe it's just that I'm still super tired. We worked like banshees to get ready for the pour - originally we thought it was happening today, but then Wednesday Jim said Thursday was the day, so we set the interior posts quick like on Wednesday. Matt, Dad and I did three in the morning before Matt had to get to work, then some of Jim's crew showed up to save our behinds and set four more before they got called away to a Menards emergency. Dan and Dad and I did the last one and then Dan and I worked like crazy to put down the vapor barrier and insulation for under the floor. We put Jim's generator through its paces for lighting since it gets dark so early now and wore down Mom's bread knife some cutting insulation(serated blades work better for some reason). The generator gave up the ghost right about when I did at nine, but then we got up at 5:30 to finish up the last dregs of insulation. Sixteen sides is a lot of corners and wierd angles - we chose it because it gives you the most enclosed space short of being completely round, but boy was it a chore!! Like a make your own puzzle piece game, only in the dark and cold. Then yesterday we got it all squared away in time for Jim's crew, but the generator's starter button had died, so we were in a quandary about power, but Dad came to the rescue. He had a temporary electrical box all wired up for us that he hadn't installed yet, so we quick slapped that on the post and hooked it up lickety split, and after a minor moment of heart stopping nothing before we reset the ground-fault button, we had juice!! Then the concrete truck showed up an hour early (after being nearly two hours late for the first footing pour two weeks ago), but Jim's crew was ready inside of ten minutes and the mud started!! It all turned out lovely, false starts and all. They say Providence protects sailors, children and fools - I think we've got fools and sailors tied up in a bow. This project probably looks like a ship of fools and somedays it feels like it for sure, but then with a lot of help from family and the Man Upstairs it all comes out !!</div></div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-29675662714461189482007-11-05T07:54:00.000-08:002007-11-05T08:50:16.280-08:00Gales of November<a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry9IiKNmLPI/AAAAAAAAACw/i8JQjhED-Ao/s1600-h/IMG_0426.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129398252292418802" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry9IiKNmLPI/AAAAAAAAACw/i8JQjhED-Ao/s320/IMG_0426.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry9IjaNmLQI/AAAAAAAAAC4/F9UtyBobpGc/s1600-h/IMG_0423.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129398273767255298" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry9IjaNmLQI/AAAAAAAAAC4/F9UtyBobpGc/s320/IMG_0423.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry9C_6NmLOI/AAAAAAAAACo/PB4FXN491LM/s1600-h/IMG_0430.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129392166323760354" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry9C_6NmLOI/AAAAAAAAACo/PB4FXN491LM/s320/IMG_0430.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div>The wind is definitely frisky out there today!! The weekend was great - productive, but as usual some roadblocks occurred. Our posts won't be here till later this week, so the pouring this week is probably not going to happen, although as it stands the weather might actually improve a little late this weekend/early next week. I'm crossing my fingers. As you can see from the pics from yesterday, we have the exterior insulation up on the footings and have evened out the pad. Now it just needs to quit blowing for a bit so I can put down the vapor barrier and insulation! And power - perhaps Tuesday or Wednesday we will have usable power at the site. Deb and Matt both came out this weekend and helped immensely. Dan I think was relieved to go back to work after having last week off - he didn't get too much of a vacation!! Even Lauren helped, pulling nails out of the concrete forms so we could clean up the site. </div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-48358989358858451742007-11-03T16:32:00.000-07:002007-11-03T18:29:32.247-07:00Months of Progress<a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0Zs6NmLKI/AAAAAAAAACI/hlniZNyzBOw/s1600-h/IMG_0413.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128783809976085666" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0Zs6NmLKI/AAAAAAAAACI/hlniZNyzBOw/s320/IMG_0413.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0Zt6NmLLI/AAAAAAAAACQ/Yo8vgiESgkg/s1600-h/IMG_0408.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128783827155954866" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0Zt6NmLLI/AAAAAAAAACQ/Yo8vgiESgkg/s320/IMG_0408.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0ZuKNmLMI/AAAAAAAAACY/HOCrXMbf3ew/s1600-h/Jessi&Danshouse%2017%20Oct%202007%20010.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128783831450922178" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0ZuKNmLMI/AAAAAAAAACY/HOCrXMbf3ew/s320/Jessi%26Danshouse%252017%2520Oct%25202007%2520010.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0ZuaNmLNI/AAAAAAAAACg/TACGDWM-D1w/s1600-h/Jessi&Danshouse%2017%20Oct%202007%20006.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128783835745889490" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0ZuaNmLNI/AAAAAAAAACg/TACGDWM-D1w/s320/Jessi%26Danshouse%252017%2520Oct%25202007%2520006.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><br /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0U6aNmLII/AAAAAAAAAB4/Iqn8K_Mbb88/s1600-h/IMG_0413.JPG"></a><br /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0U6aNmLJI/AAAAAAAAACA/6AQzIgRIOgA/s1600-h/002.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128778544346180754" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0U6aNmLJI/AAAAAAAAACA/6AQzIgRIOgA/s320/002.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0Q06NmLGI/AAAAAAAAABo/DL2Nhz5Q9Sc/s1600-h/IMG_0399.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128774051810389090" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0Q06NmLGI/AAAAAAAAABo/DL2Nhz5Q9Sc/s320/IMG_0399.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0PFKNmLFI/AAAAAAAAABg/kR4FK0vJSxY/s1600-h/IMG_0395.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128772131960007762" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0PFKNmLFI/AAAAAAAAABg/kR4FK0vJSxY/s320/IMG_0395.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0MqKNmLEI/AAAAAAAAABY/NPdiLSslu20/s1600-h/IMG_0379.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128769469080284226" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0MqKNmLEI/AAAAAAAAABY/NPdiLSslu20/s320/IMG_0379.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0JD6NmLDI/AAAAAAAAABQ/wq3WtDGLohI/s1600-h/IMG_0375.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128765513415404594" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0JD6NmLDI/AAAAAAAAABQ/wq3WtDGLohI/s320/IMG_0375.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>We've had so much progress to work on we've had no time to blog about it!! You'll have to forgive me for the backwards photo display - next time I'll know to go in reverse order. So...the plumbers came and laid pipes galore into our well compacted pad, then we spent what felt like weeks threading rebar for the footing forms, and then finally we got to the concrete!! Dan's Uncle Jim has a great crew that helped us make our plans work and refrained from telling us we are completely crazy!! As of Nov. 2, we have the footings poured and the big exterior uprights in place. Dunn County Electric gave us a new transformer on Wednesday that will serve both Mom and Dad's house, their outbuildings, the farmhouse and our spread. Next week we'll pour the floor inside after we even out the pad and install insulation galore. The interior posts will then go up and the masonry heater will come to fruition, and we can slap a roof on this baby!! The plan is to do temporary fill between the posts with straw bales so we can work inside for the winter. Depending on how that works we may be able to lay cordwood wall by wall as the temperature allows - we'll have to see how a portable heater works/break in the masonry heater. All in all, even when you're beat, all you can do is move forward!!<br /><br /><br /></div><div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6005106248534161891.post-54101705434183277492007-07-04T12:30:00.000-07:002007-11-03T16:31:39.290-07:00Welcome to the Whistlepig!!<a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0EVKNmLCI/AAAAAAAAABI/gdQwJNM-cxk/s1600-h/IMG_0372.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128760312210009122" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Ry0EVKNmLCI/AAAAAAAAABI/gdQwJNM-cxk/s320/IMG_0372.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Rov5b6nbtlI/AAAAAAAAAAc/sXnyX0e29Ek/s1600-h/IMG_0342.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5083430862404171346" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; CURSOR: pointer" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_qzNC351UZuo/Rov5b6nbtlI/AAAAAAAAAAc/sXnyX0e29Ek/s320/IMG_0342.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br />Hello from Jessi and Dan - we've set this up so we can keep everyone abreast of our adventures in cordwood building!! The former website isn't super easy to update and would need to be moved, so we've changed venues.<br /><br />As of July 4th, 2007, we have finished the sand pad that our foundation will float on and are ready to start on digging the forms for the wall bases. The plumbers will come soon and set up the drain to the septic tank and the outside spigots. Then we'll be able to pour concrete and have the stove people come - only 10 months after we originally thought we'd be able to!!<br /><br />Dan has been a sand moving machine - here he is with his trusty wheelbarrow. And here is the finished pad - way more sand than anyone wants to move!!</div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15977699556422715716noreply@blogger.com0
